Workforce

1990 Census figures show there were 21,902 county residents at work, 14,444 of which worked in Montgomery County. A total of 20,068 persons were employed in Montgomery County, with an in commutation of 5,624 workers, and an out commutation of 7,458 workers. Their average travel time to work was 20 minutes, with 45% of the workers traveling 1 minute or less to their jobs.

The County has two strong resources in the arena of workforce development. The Private Industry Council in Amsterdam and the Workforce Investment Board work in conjunction with the New York State Department of Labor to provide job search assistance, on-the-job training, summer youth employment, dislocated worker assistance, vocational training and skills enhancement, resume writing, GED training, and individual counseling. Since its inception in 1983, over 500 employers have utilized the tri-county agency's services. Fulton-Montgomery Community College is another player in workforce development, by offering career-oriented degree and certificate e programs for employment in business, technology and nursing; providing training (credit and non-credit) in response to a specific need; workforce readiness training; and welfare to work activities. Through the start-up of a Business Resource Center, the college continues to grow in its economic development role in Fulton and Montgomery counties.

Vocational & Work Study Programs

The Hamilton-Fulton-Montgomery BOCES offers a variety of vocational technical programs to both students and adults in fields ranging from auto mechanics to cosmetology. BOCES offers work-study programs that place students in local businesses where they can explore and learn skills in various job titles.

Hispanic Outreach Services


Hispanic Outreach Services serves the Hispanic community through Catholic Charities of Amsterdam, and its headquarters in Albany. Working for the betterment of the Hispanic/Latino community, HOS offers Family Assistance Services and Hispanic Youth Life enrichment Services. The agency helps individuals in need, and provides employment counseling and referrals. HOS can also assist employees in enrolling in English as a Second Language (ESL) courses, and provide help in obtaining a GED. Hispanic Outreach Services also provides translation services to clients.

Centro Civico

Centro Civico of Amsterdam, Inc. currently offers a wide range of programming to provide community members with the skills to become self-sufficient and move forward economically.

The English as a Second or Other Language (ESOL) is offered mornings and evenings to generate the development of English language, computer training and basic employment readiness skills.

Centro also is involved in Micro Enterprise Development and Business Incubation. The agency provides education, support, guidance and the necessary referrals related to business development.

The Private Industry Council

On-The-Job Training
The Fulton, Montgomery and Schoharie Counties Private Industry Council (PIC) provide OJT assistance to area businesses by reimbursing the company for up to 50% of an eligible new worker's ages during a specified training people. PIC can also help arrange and pay for specialized training to groups of new employees in some or all aspects of their new jobs.


PIC also offers assistance in screening new hires, creating job training plans and developing individual job descriptions.

Vocational & Educational Services for Individuals with Disabilities (VESID)

Employee Tax Credits & Wage Reimbursements
VESID provides employers with prescreened job-ready disabled individuals and the follow-up services necessary to ensure employer satisfaction. VESID also subsidizes the cost of training new disabled employees through tax credits and wage reimbursement that varies depending on the training services.

MONTGOMERY COUNTY - A QUALITY WAY OF LIFE

Montgomery County is ideally located to service all major eastern US and Canadian markets. Located just 27 miles west of Albany in the Mohawk Valley Region of New York State. We are within 750 miles of over half of the population of the US and Canada, more than half of all business establishments and more than 60 percent of North America's manufacturing facilities and skilled workers.

In an area of 409 square miles, the county has ten villages, one city (Amsterdam), and 10 towns, with a total US Census 2000 population of 49,708.

In today's changing business environment, one unchangeable factor is location. The Capital Region location allows access to a large number and affluent market area. One day's shipping time (850 miles) give access to:

Outlook

Businesses remain optimistic about the future of their companies in Montgomery County. The 2001 Marvin & Company Business Climate Survey, which also covered other counties in the Capital District, showed that 64.1% of the businesses responding said that last year their business increased, and another 24.8% said it remained stable. Looking towards 2001, an overwhelming 62% stated they thought profits would increase, with another 31.7% indicating stability. These figures are more poignant taking into consideration that the same respondents saw other areas of the region as stagnant or struggling.

Health Care

Health care options available in Montgomery County include St. Mary's Hospital and Amsterdam Memorial Hospital, both located in Amsterdam. St. Mary's Hospital provides acute inpatient care, a cardiac care center, natural family planning and prenatal care, mental health and alcoholism services, oncology, outpatient surgery, wellness programs, and a birthing center.
Amsterdam Memorial offers emergency services, a general medical and a women's health center, rehabilitation services, adult day care and respite, acute care, pediatrics and ambulatory surgery, and wellness programs. Health care choices are supplemented by a number of private physicians, specialists, and providers of eye care, hearing, chiropractic and acupuncture care.

St. Mary's Hospital, founded in 1903 by the Sisters of St. Joseph of Carondelet, is the largest acute care hospital in the region. The hospital cares for over 130,000 patients each year. St. Mary's range of services is designed to fulfill the total health care needs of the community, while being the lowest cost provider.

More than a hospital, St. Mary's has become a health care system with three primary care centers and additional sites in the planning stages. St. Mary's was the first hospital in the region to develop community primary care centers. These centers, with doctor's office settings, include the provision of specialty medical services and laboratory services as well as occupational health services.

Amsterdam Memorial Hospital, incorporated in 1888, is a medical health complex that provides outpatient, ambulatory care and acute inpatient medical, surgical and long term health-care services to over 100,000 patients each year. The Amsterdam Memorial Hospital medical complex is one of the region's largest employers, employing over 560 nurses, therapists, technicians and support professionals.

Education

Secondary education in Montgomery County is provided by the Greater Amsterdam, Fonda-Fultonville, Canajoharie, Fort Plain and St. Johnsville school districts, the Board of Cooperative Educational Services and private schools such as Montgomery Academy, St. Mary's Institute and St. Stanislaus School. A number of approved day care centers serve the area and a complete up-to-date listing can be obtained from the Children Services Network in Amsterdam.

Post Secondary and Graduate in Montgomery County is served by Fulton-Montgomery Community College; Union College and Schenectady County Community College in Schenectady County; and Skidmore College in Saratoga County. In addition, there are 13 other colleges and universities in the Capital Region, offering students and residents an unlimited choice of educational and career opportunities. Ten are located in nearby Albany County including the University at Albany; Albany Medical College; Albany Law School and Albany College of Pharmacy, both part of Union College; Siena College; and the College of Saint Rose. Other colleges and universities within the six-county Metropolitan Statistical Area are Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute and Hudson Valley Community College in Rensselaer County

Montgomery County's New York Lottery Aid to education for 1997-98 was $6.9 million.

Keep informed on area events through the daily newspaper, The Recorder, the weekly Courier Standard Enterprise or My Shopper. The area is also serviced by the Albany Times Union and Schenectady's Daily Gazette. WBUG and WCSS provide excellent local radio coverage of area events.

Cultural Amenities

Montgomery County is located just thirty-five miles from Albany, the crossroads of the Capital Region. The Capital Region is the home for two resident professional theaters, community and college theaters, a professional symphony orchestra, choral societies, a chamber music group and a resident contemporary dance company. Famous artists from around the world visit the region and perform at such theaters as Proctor's in Schenectady, the Troy Music Hall and the Saratoga Performing Arts Center (SPAC) in Saratoga Springs. SPAC is the summer home of the New York City ballet and opera companies and the Philadelphia Orchestra. Also within an hour's drive of the Capital Region is Tanglewood - summer home for the Boston Symphony.

Our county boasts six libraries and the Montgomery County Department of History and Archives, all of which are rich resources for local history and genealogical research.

Nearly 90 churches, synagogues and places of worship are available for the spiritual needs of the community.

Montgomery County is fortunate to have a number of agencies that provide services to the less fortunate. For example, the Independent Living Center provides services to those with disabilities in conjunction with the New York State Office of Vocational and Educational Services for Individuals with Disabilities. Independent Living provides advocacy, living skills training, transportation, equipment and consultation to nearly 500 individuals and their families.
