Chamber Warns of Potential Scams

Friday, August 13th, 2010

The Montgomery County Chamber of Commerce was recently made aware of two more possible scams within the area.

The chamber received a call from one of their members stating that there was a woman going around to local businesses acting as an ad representative of either non-existent publications or falsely representing a local business. The woman will discuss a special ad promotion but the business needs to pay for the advertisement with cash. After

The Chamber also received a call from a different member regarding a phone call he received regarding winning money. The business person suspected it being a scam and began to ask questions regarding the money. He was informed that there were two representatives waiting for him at the chamber to present him a check as the chamber would be a recipient of a portion of the proceeds from the winnings.

The chamber stresses to the community that they are not involved in any lottery-type of contest nor do they receive proceeds from this type of contest. They also stress that when they have a special project or promotion occurring they notify members through letters, their newsletter, and emails.

Following are simple guidelines you can follow to help prevent being scammed: do not let anyone pressure you into making decisions about money; if someone comes to your door, ask to see their identification; you do not have to let them in and they MUST leave if you ask them to; if you receive a phone call for donations, always ask  for the name of the person you are speaking to and who they represent; do not give your personal, credit card, or online account details over the phone; if you think the organization is suspicious ask for more information and do not hesitate in contacting local authorities.

Please contact The Chamber at 842-8200 with any questions regarding a project they might be working on or to notify them of someone acting as a chamber representative.

THE PATIENT PROTECTION AND AFFORDABLE CARE ACT Small Business Health Care Tax Credit

Friday, July 9th, 2010

Effective January 1, 2010, the Small Business Health Care Tax Credit[1] is available to eligible employers who employ no more than 25 full-time[2] equivalent employees and pay at least 50% of health insurance premiums for their employees under a “qualifying arrangement”.[3] Rates of credit for years 2010-2013 for small businesses and nonprofit organizations are 35% and 25% of health insurance premiums that the employers pay for their employees, respectively. Starting in 2014, the credit for small businesses and nonprofit organizations will increase to 50% and 35%, respectively.

This credit is subject to two phase outs:

i) Between 10 and 25 full-time equivalent[4] employees;

ii) Average annual wages[5] of employees between $25,000 and $50,000.

Each qualified employer[6] may claim this credit for four years starting with its tax year beginning in 2010. For tax years beginning after 2013, small employers must purchase health insurance coverage for their employees through an exchange in order to claim this credit for an additional two consecutive years. The IRS will be providing further guidance for nonprofit organizations to claim this credit.

[1] This credit is a general business tax credit.

[2] An employee works at least 40 hours per week.

[3] Subject to other requirements, a qualifying arrangement stipulates a uniform percentage of premiums that the employers pay for each of their employees’ health care coverage.

[4] Full-time equivalent = total annual hours of part-time employees divided by 2,080 hours. Seasonal worker hours and wages are not counted unless that seasonal worker works more than 120 days in the tax year.

[5] The average annual wages do not count the wages/ salaries of owners or their family members.

[6] Qualified employers do not include governmental employers.
