Transportation is a major resource in Montgomery County. The New York State Thruway bisects the length of the County, with three exits: Amsterdam, Fonda/Fultonville and Canajoharie. Routes 5 and 5-S run parallel to the Thruway on the North and South side of the Mohawk River. A connection to Route I-88 can be made by taking Route 30 South, and Route 30 or Route 30-A north connects to Fulton County, the Adirondack Park and points North. Route 67 is an efficient link to Saratoga County.

Montgomery County is situated roughly 40 miles from the City of Albany, the State Capitol, and the Port of Albany and Albany Airport, now undergoing major renovations. We are 8 miles from Fulton County Airport and 10 miles from Stratton Air National Guard Base and the Schenectady County Airport.

The county is serviced by Amtrak which has a station in Amsterdam, and by CSX Transportation. The New York State Barge Canal accommodates boat traffic.
